In 2006 it was claimed that over 80 million people have some sort of Cardio Vascular Disease in the USA alone. The question is: why, with the huge advances in medicine and our greater understanding of the link between healthy eating and physiological well-being, are so many people sick?

The simple answer is Too Much Sugar. An excess in your diet can cause hyper- or hypo-glycemia, diabetes, obesity and, in extreme cases, Cardio Vascular Disease. A more complicated answer would require the examination of underlying fundamental factors...which would expose some very interesting themes:

      1. Most people are permanently dehydrated – if you drink lots of tea, coffee or especially soda, your body has to filter out absolutely everything you drink. So before you’ve even started your day, your body is struggling to get rid of all the by-products of your metabolism.

      2. Salt needs water – if you eat processed table salt you should be aware that the chemical composition is quite different to that of natural sea salt, making it more harmful to your body, meaning that you need to increase your liquid levels. It's easy to reach for a fizzy drink, but this just adds to the strain on your body.

      3. When you feel you need sugar… you just need water – many people get an urge for something sugary to boost energy, when in fact they are simply dehydrated. Eating something sugary then puts a strain on the body which could be avoided by drinking a couple of glasses of water first; when you feel hungry or in the need for sugar you may just be thirsty without even realising it.

      4. Thirst is too late – when you actually feel thirsty, rather than hungry, you are already too dehydrated and it will take quite a bit of effort to get you fully hydrated again. It can take up to 24 hours to fully restore hydration and just drinking water when you are actively thirsty will not correctly re-hydrate you.

      5. Water needs electrolytes and minerals – if you have a diet which contains processed foods, fats and salt water will help, but to restore your blood pressure and chemistry to normal you will also need to replace the minerals and electrolytes which will have been thrown out of balance by the junk food. If you just drink a glass of water on its own, you’ll not get the full benefit. Have a piece of fruit with your glass of water to aid full re-hydration.

6. Dehydration strains your heart – imagine how much harder it would be if you had to pump custard instead of water with a hand pump. And this is what happens to you blood when you become dehydrated; it becomes thicker and gloopier, making your heart work harder and harder.

So if you made it a habit to drink a glass of water regularly throughout the day you would benefit from: reduced thirst, reduced hunger, increased energy, decreased likelihood of hyper- or hypo-glycemia, diabetes, obesity or, in extreme cases, Cardio Vascular Disease. So drink a glass of water - save your life.
